The Crown Inn – over the years…

The Crown Inn is located in a small village, Shorwell, just 5 miles from the centre of the Isle of Wight's principal town of Newport. Shorwell, a countryside village in the southwest, is a pretty, quiet little hideaway – the Post Office is its only shop! Throughout Shorwell you'll find thatched cottages, three impressive manor houses and a historic church. Customers at the village's Crown Inn enjoy an authentic country atmosphere, a log fire in winter and a rear garden complete with a trout stream. It's a welcoming destination for outdoor types who voted it Best Pub For Walkers in a recent Wightlink survey.

The public house is believed to date back to the early 1700's although a new extension was added within the last 20 years. The Crown has seen few landlords since the war and was one of the first pubs that could boast an Island wide trade. One infamous past landlord was Vivian "Nutty" Edwards, a colourful host for over 20 years after the war and drew crowds for his nightly "music hall performances" of stories and anecdotes about his army antics and especially the stories of the Great Wall of China. There are few that will forget the Labradors Corporal, Captain and Cider who were always ready to chip in with a trick or two. On leaving the Crown he became the last Island member of the Chelsea pensioners in the 1960's.

Time has moved on and now the pub is a popular family rendezvous with a beautiful trout stream, ducks and children's play area. The trout grow fat in the summer and many a heron has flown away with a smile on his face. The most recent rebuild has seen a big increase in floor area but the pub still retains much of its character. The Crown in as reputed to have it's own who's said to be very friendly, althoughsometimes takes a dislike to anyone who plays cards by scattering cards on the bar floor overnight.
